Begin your writer’s life

The idea behind 550 Words Daily is simple.

You just have to write 550 words a day.

Here’s where it gets hard.

You’ll do this every day. Every. Day.

If you don’t, you’ll have to explain yourself. In detail.

We provide numbers because some of us are competitive and like to hit goals. But in reality…

the goal is not to meet a total number of words overall, but to establish a practice of writing daily — whether you feel like it or not.

Because although writing seems glamorous from the outside, it’s a job.

If you accept this job — to write 550 words daily — you will be working. Which means:

  • you’re not calling in sick
  • you’re not blowing it off because you don’t feel like it
  • you’re not saying the work isn’t good enough to count

You will be working. That work is putting words down on paper, on screen, however you want to do this.

Your part of the bargain is your commitment to establishing a daily writing practice. Maybe you want to write a novel, poetry collection, series of short stories, or build a blog. This technique works for anything you want to produce.

On this end, we’ll support you with easy-to-follow steps.

You’ll agree to do three things:

  1. Log your daily output (a minimum of 550 words) and the time you started writing on a spreadsheet we’ll provide a link to.
  2. Explain yourself if you didn’t reach that number with an entry on the Excuses page detailing why you didn’t write.
  3. Sign up for two ‘touch-base’ meetings each month — a 30 minute online group chat to share strategies, what worked and what didn’t

This process will:

  • hold you accountable
  • help you identify patterns of success and failure
  • enable you to establish a system that will work for you.

It follows the concept of behavior design in which you create conditions that will help you achieve your goals.

To participate in 550 Words Daily, you have two options:
